Virtual Reality (2)

The applications
Potential uses for this kind of virtual reality are both fun and practical. Full-immersion video games would make the player's experience more realistic and exciting.

Virtual reality can also be used in education. Astronomy students, for example, could explore 3-D models of outer space. Medical students could study the human body and even practice surgery using digital models. This would let them improve their skills without endangering real patients.

Doctors might use virtual reality to guide robots to perform surgery. This could make the surgery both faster and safer. Doctors could even perform surgery from a different location.

Ordinary people's ideas may also change because of virtual reality. Participants in one study played a virtual-reality game being represented by an image of a person of a different race. The studies suggested that this experience reduced prejudice. This new technology reminds people that we may look different on the outside, but we are all the same inside.

As virtual-reality technology continues to develop, virtual worlds might just transform life in the real one.
