The Wisdom of Matthew McConaughey (2)

"Find Your Frequency"
While dealing with fame, McConaughey took some roles that were important to him.

Contact's theme was about the relationship of God and science, and Amistad discussed slavery. The first film was successful, but the second project started a string of financial disappointments.

"We all have a frequency, where things are clicking, "McConaughey says. "I can adapt better. I'm catching more green lights." Looking back, he might say he found his frequency in romantic comedy

He describes a light quality in romantic comedies that keeps things very "Saturday." And he adds, "I'm good on Saturdays." Starting with 2001's The Wedding Planner, he was involved with several hits.

However, money-makers like How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days were looked down upon. So McConaughey decided to take a break. "I'm getting into my 40s, a great time for a man. I've started a family. I want to take time to laugh and love and emjoy these adventures." His frequency had changed.

The Love of Perfume (2)

Beginning in the 14th century, perfume was used mainly by French royalty and other wealthy people. No one took baths regularly, so fragrance was used to cover up body odor. King Louis XV enjoyed perfume a lot. He ordered a different fragrance daily for his apartment. Perfume became very popular in the 17th century as people across the country began using it. As demand grew, the Western perfume industry got its start.

The sweet smell of success
People today still love perfume. And famous people are using that appreciation for their personal gain. Fans are eager to buy a fragrance named after their favorite star. In fact of the top 100 best-selling perfumes, about one-third is linked to famous people. But it's not limited to stars. Schools and sports teams are also starting to sell fragrances named after them. They know that as long as people use perfume, there will be a steady market.

With such a lasting passion for fragrance, perfume is here to stay.

The Love of Perfume (1)

Sweet smells reach our mind, body and soul

Did you put on perfume or cologne today? If so, you are carrying on a long tradition that began in early Egypt.

Ancient drawings dating back to around 3500 B.C. show Egyptians using fragrances. They used them in their religious services. They also used scented oils to clean their skin. From Egypt, the use of perfume spread to Greece, Rome and beyond.

The Greeks are thought to have been the first to make liquid perfumes. Their method was to mix heavy oils and fragrant powders. In early Rome men often shaved their faces. They would rub fragrance into their skin as part of the process.

Perfume goes to Europe
Perfume were brought to Europe around the 11th century by Arab and Persian traders. In 1370 in Hungary, the first modern cologne was made for the queen. It was made by mixing scented oils with alcohol and other liquids.

But France would take the art of perfume-making to a whole new level.
