Smile and Say Cheese!

Look your best in your next selfie

What can be more fun than taking a photo of yourself to send to your friends? You want them to share the fun you're having, but you also want to look good. Who wants to look awful in their selfie? You won't. If you remember a few basic things.

First, you should have good lighting. Make sure it's not too harsh or too dark. Taking a photo with your back to a sunny window is not a good idea. Your face will be dark. Stand facing the window instead, so the natural light falls on your face.

Next, check your background. Make sure it's clear and not cluttered or busy. Use a filter to make your features and your skin look better. Instagram has one and so do editing programs like Lo-Mob or Photo FX. Do something interesting like striking a pose or balancing something on your head. Be creative!

When you take a selfie, keep these things in mind. Then, more than likely, you'll have a memorable one to share.

"Can I Get a Discount" (2)

Bargaining etiquette
Although bargaining customs vary, a few rules of etiquette apply in most cultures. First, avoid wasting people's time. If you don't intend to make a purchase, don't initiate bargaining. While bargaining, it is OK to walk away. But once you agree to a price, you must buy the item.

Stay polite. Don't get indignant if the first prices are too high. Remember, salespeople expect to bargain. Similarly, don't criticize items the shop's owners made themselves. And know when to stop trying to drive the price lower. Sellers in Third-World countries probably need the money more than you do.

Other options
Even in countries that don't allow bargaining, you may find abundant opportunities to save money. Many stores sell old items on clearance or hold huge sales at the end of a season. Others offer discount cards to regular customers. Some of these can function as credit cards within the store, and a few can even be used elsewhere.

Wherever you go,understanding local customs can help you find good prices - and great goods.

"Can I Get a Discount" (1)

Bargaining customs around the world
Imagine shopping in another country and spotting a beautiful scarf. The salesperson tells you the price, but it's more than you want to pay. What do you do?

Where to bargain
The answer depends largely on what part of the world you're in. Are you visiting Southeast Asia, the Middle East, Latin America or Africa? In these places, and several others, prices often are not set in stone. In fact, customers are expected to bargain before agreeing to a price. Salespeople often ask for a high price first because they plan to decrease it.

On the other hand, in North America, Europe and Australia, bargaining is rare and often frowned upon. The price listed on a price tag cannot be changed. But expectations vary from store to store as well as from country to country. Large stores and malls usually don't allow bargaining, even in countries where it would normally be acceptable. On the other hand, outdoor stalls and flea markets, even in Western countries, usually allow bargaining. When in doubt, consult a guidebook - or better yet, a local friend.

Seeing the Great Wall

The Great Wall captures the imagination of all who visit

The Great Wall or changcheng (中國的長城) snakes more than 6,000 kilometers. It goes from the Gobi Desert (戈壁) to the Yellow Sea (黃海). First built to keep out invaders, it is now a popular tourist attraction. People hike the whole length of the wall or just explore different sections.

Badaling (八達嶺)
Five different sections of the wall lie near Beijing and can be accessed easily. Of these, Badaling is the most famous. This section is one of the closest to the city and, thus, the most convenient for visitors. Tourists cover it like ants. This part is also the easiest to walk since it has had the most repairs.

Jinshanling (金山嶺)
About two hours away by bus lies Jinshanling. This well-preserved section of the wall has not been repaired since 1570! If you’re looking for a peaceful walk and amazing views, this is the spot to visit. During spring and summer, you can see a “cloud sea” below you as you walk the wall.

Huangyaguan (黃崖關)
Not far from Tianjin (天津) lies another spectacular section of the Great Wall, Huangyaguan. Built over 1400 years ago, it received major repairs in 1984. The 3-kilometer section boasts 20 water towers and one water gate. This section is like a miniature representation of the entire Great Wall. Some areas are quite steep and narrow, but the scenery is impressive.

Several cultural attractions are situated in the cultural district near the wall. See the Bagua Castle (八卦城), which looks like a maze. And in the Longevity Garden, you can find over 10,000 writing sytles of the character "shou" (壽).

Jiayuguan (嘉峪關)
Out west in Gansu sits another restored section of the wall. About six kilometers from Jiayuguan City, you can visit Jiayuguan. It was the starting place for the section of the Great Wall built during the Ming Dynasty. This pass is the best preserved of the Great Wall military forts. The wall surrounds an inner city with interesting buildings to explore.

Ningxia (寧夏)
In nearby Ningxia, the Great Wall winds 1.506 kilometers through the region. Here you can find the oldest part of the wall. Built in the Qin Dynasty, it zigzags about from Gansu Province and into Ningxia. Many, many people died building this section. The builders had to first beat the earth into powder. Then they sifted it and finally steamed it before pounding it into the wall.

Shanhaiguan (山海關)
You'll find the eastern end of the wall near the city of Shanhaiguan. Here the wall meets the sea, forming a unique sight called the Old Dragon's Head. A large fort stands here as well as the wall. The east tower of the Shanhai Pass is called the First Pass Under Heaven. Stand near the tower to see the roaring sea on one side and the Great Wall on the other.

Wherever you choose to visit the Great Wall, you will be amazed. It is like no other structure on Earth.

To Peel or Not to Peel (2)

What is zest?
Health benefits of organic food

You can, but getting your vitamins from fresh fruit is better for you. And the peels can contain more vitamins than the fruit of juice.

Did you know that orange peels have more vitamin C than orange juice?

So I should start eating orange peels?

Why not? You can add some grated orange peel to a vegetable dish like asparagus.

But I don’t like the taste of orange peel.

OK. What about apple peels? Apple skins lower your cholesterol and blood sugar.

Eating apple peels sound nasty. Besides pesticides, there might be bacteria on the skins.

Well then, buy organic food.

But it’s expensive.

Then you don’t have to peel your fruit. Wait, do you peel All fruit?

Of course. I peel the fruit and discard the peels.

What about blueberries?

Come on, you can’t peel that kind of fruit.

So you like eating some fruit peels?

I didn’t say that. Most peels don’t taste good, so why eat them?

Because they are full of nutrients. So you’re fortunate I made you this healthy smoothie. Drink it up and enjoy!

To Peel or Not to Peel (1)

Are fruit peels really bad to eat?

Carl is in the kitchen making a smoothie when his roommate Ray walks in.

Ray: Wow, is this gigantic smoothie mine? It looks great. What's in it?

Carl: Well, give it a taste, and tell me what you think!

Ray: Mmmm... Tastes like banana, blueberries, maybe an orange... and something else. But I am not sure what something else.

Carl: That "something else" is the banana peel!

Ray: Are you serious? You made me a banana-peel smoothie?!

Carl: No, it's not just banana peel. I blended the entire banana into the smoothie. Actually, there's orange peel in it as well.

Ray: But isn't banana peel bad for you?

Carl: Of course not! Banana peels are rich in fiber, which is true of many other kinds of fruit and some vegetables too.

Ray: But what about the pesticides? A lot of farmers spray their fruit trees with pesticides.

Carl: That's true. But I washed the peel first.

Ray: I hope you scrubbed it with a highly concentrated soap.

Carl: That's a little extreme. Water and regular soap should be adequate. Anyway, peels are full of vitamins, too.

Ray: Maybe. But I can always take my vitamins in the form of a pill.

Japan's National Snack: Oden (2)

Basic Ingredients
Some would say that no pot of oden is complete without several key ingredients. Fish cakes and fried tofu, often stuffed with mochi or vegetables, make up the main ingredients. The most common vegetables use include daikon radish and knotted kelp with boiled egg finishing off the pot.

Your Friendly Neighborhood Oden
If you travel to different parts of Japan, you will find that many places have their own variation of this dish. Shizuoka offers a very dark soup made with beef tendon and still keeps the dengaku sticks.

Shizuoka has a whole street lined with oden vendors, and an annual oden festival is held every year in the middle of February. Toyama's oden is marked by fish balls made with local seafood from Toyama Bay. You can also find famous oden establishments with their own special styles. Otafuku in Tokyo has been open since 1916 and claims a 60-year-old broth.

But if you're not in Japan, don't worry! A popular snack all over Asia, oden can also be found as close as your local convenience store.

Japan's National Snack: Oden (1)

A favorite from Aomori to Nagasaki and beyond

In Japan, when people think of winter, oden is likely to come to mind. It's known as one of Japan's favorite winter snacks, but it's so popular that people eat the steamy dish as a meal even in the summer.

Oden's Debut
Oden is one of Japan's signature hot-pot dishes. The origin can be traced back to Japan's Muromachi period, which began in 1338. At that time oden was grilled over a fire on sticks -- this was called dengaku, also a form of dance performed on poles.

While oden is known for its great variety of ingredients, dengaku consisted only of tofu. It was not until the Edo period, 1600 to 1868, that more foods were added, and it began to be stewed.

Basic Broth
Oden's ingredients are often stewed for a long time in group or broth as opposed to the short cooking time of shabu shabu. The most common oden soup is probably dashi broth, made from dried mushrooms, dried kelp, and dried fish. Dashi broth is actually famous contributing umami, the fifth basic taste, to the cuisine.

Four Ways Your Smartphone Can Make You Skinny (1) (2)

How to use technology to meet your weight-loss goal

On January 1, you resolved to lose 10 pounds. Six weeks later, you can feel your motivation waning. Making a salad or heading to spin class probably seem like good ways to get back on track. But hanging out online might actually be better. Here are four ways to make your feeds work:

1. Follow tweeters with tips. The motivation and can-do advice shared by nutritionists and weight-loss bloggers appear to be helpful. People who are active on Twitter, have large followings, and post regularly have an impact on people's behavior. You can also use Twitter's advanced search to find people tweeting about nutrition, exercise, or weight loss in your city.

2. Have a visual feast. Looking at photos of foods with similar flavors to your worst cravings (like sweet or salty) can dull your appetite. And it may make the real thing seem less enjoyable, finds a Journal of Consumer Psychology study. Follow food bloggers and fill up on mouth-watering photos instead of that nighttime bowl of ice cream.

3. Manage your Facebook friends. It's not just friends boasting about their amazing vacations that can make you feel like you're missing out and potentially derail your progress. Hearing about someone who got up at 4 a.m. for a 10-mile jog can make you feel deflated. Set up filters so you're not subject to posts by either of these types of friends. Focus instead on encouraging friends who post about healthy habits that feel more doable. These could be taking a post-dinner walk or making a green smoothie for breakfast. By selecting "Get Notifications" for them in your settings, Facebook will even tell you every time they post something new.

4. Use your smartphone. Yes, the screen is smaller and the keyboard more typo-prone than your laptop. But new research has been published in the International Journal of Medical Informatics. People who check their social feeds with a mobile device are more engaged than computer users. And they shed more pounds as a result. Smart call? We'd say so.

José André Montaño (2)

Singer Vero Perez says the exceptional thing about Josè isn't his age or even his blindness. According to Perez, "It's his ability to be completely free ... as a true artist should be. He shows other musicians how jazz music really is [to be played.]. As Josè's fame spreads, he has more chances to tour and perform. He has traveled throughout Bolivia and into Brazil and Peru.

Encouraging others
When Josè is at home with his family, he is a normal little boy. He goes to school and does his homework. But when he begins playing the piano or drums, his musical genius becomes apparent.

Josè has proved that nothing will keep him from doing what he loves best. His positive attitude encourages others to look past their own obstacles and reach for their dreams.

José André Montaño (1)

This young Bolivian musician makes new fans every time he plays

A crowd gathered recently to hear a popular jazz band. The music was good, and the musicians were very talented. But everyone had come to see one player in particular -- 9-year-old Jose Andre Montano.

Why were so many music-lovers interested in seeing this young man perform? It is because he is a jazz prodigy, and he is blind.

Josè's life began in Totora, Bolivia, where he was born blind. Yet despite his lack of sight, the boy began playing the drums at the age of 4. He demonstrated an amazing ability, and before long he was playing the piano, too. By the age of 5, he had formed his own jazz trio.

His parents, along with everyone else, are continually surprised by his marvelous talent. "I didn't know jazz before; he got me into it," said his father, Roberto. "I don't know how to explain how it came about. It's like the jazz was already inside him." Many professional musicians are equally impressed and welcome the chance to perform with Josè. They have noticed his deep understanding of this unique form of music.

Healthy hair doesn't stop with the kind of shampoo you use or how often you wash your hair. It also includes your diet. Here are five foods that will help keep your hair healthy:

1.Blueberries: Blueberries are one of nature's healthiest fruits. Dark berries in general (such as blackberries, raspberries and strawberries) are known to have lots of antioxidants, which are important for combating the free radicals in our body. In addition, blueberries have a lower glycemic index than a lot of other fruit, making them an ideal choice for people with diabetes or for those focusing on weight loss. Blueberries also have a ton of vitamin C. Without adequate vitamin C, your hair can break more easily. So eat your blueberries!

2.Salmon: Wild-caught salmon is full of omega-3 fatty acids, oils that our body doesn't create on its own and are essential to healthy hair and a healthy body. Salmon is also an excellent source of protein, another essential nutrient for healthy hair. If you don't like salmon, try eating walnuts or flaxseed, which are also rich in omega-3 fatty acids.

EQ - Measuring Your Emotions (1)

What's your EQ?

You took a midterm exam hoping to get a 95 percent. When you got your test paper back, you see your received only a 70 percent. How do you handle the situation?

Do you
1. make a study plan for improving your grade;
2. keep doing what you're doing and hope for the best next time;
3. use a persuasive argument to try and convince your teacher to give you a better grade;
4. tell yourself that your grade in that course really doesn't matter and focus more on the classes you're doing well in?

Your answer to the above question sheds light on your EQ, your emotional intelligence. What exactly is EQ? Psychologists Peter Salovey and John Mayer define it as the ability to understand your own feelings and emotions and those of others. Also you are able to discriminate among those feelings and use that information to guide your thinking.

Studies show that a high EQ is often linked to success in life.

Five Foods for Healthy Hair (2)

3. Oysters: Another from the sea, oysters are rich in zinc, an essential nutrient to your hair's health. Too little zinc can lead to hair breakage or a flaky scalp. If you're not a fan of oysters, you can boost your zinc intake with beef and eggs.

4. Leafy greens: Like you need another reason to eat your spinach! You know that leafy greens are important for a whole host of reasons, but now you can add a few more. They have iron, beta carotene, folate and vitamin C - all nutrients that help keep your hair full of shine.

5. Avocado: Many shampoos and hair treatments contain avocado as one of their main ingredients. That's because using avocado can repair damaged hair, prevent hair loss and even promote hair growth! But eating this fruit (yes, avocado is a fruit!) can be good for your hair, too. Avocados are rich in numerous nutrients, particularly vitamins B and E, which are important for keeping hair strong and preventing hair loss. Known as a superfood, avocados are also rich in omega-3s, antioxidants, vitamin C, K and folate.
