Your Friends and Their Phones (2)

Andy: But just think about all the time people consume looking at their phones! It affects the restaurant's ability to serve its customers.

Betsy: Hmm?

Andy: Think about how long we had to wait for a table tonight. Maybe it's because customers are looking at their phones instead of the menu. Then they're taking pictures instead of eating.

Betsy: It might add a few minutes to the total dining time, but it certainly doesn't hurt a restaurant's business. Oh! Someone left a comment about my pasta.

Andy: I could give you an opinion if you'd ask.

Betsy: See? Posting things online leads to more conversations with friends. This way they can be a part of something I'm doing - even when they aren't physically with me.

Andy: What about the people who are with you? By spending so much time on your phone, it's like you're ignoring the people right next to you.

Betsy: Relax! I'm done. Almost. I got another comment!

Andy: Seriously?

Betsy: Just let me response to Shirley about my picture...

Andy: Go right ahead. I'm going to try to enjoy my now-cold meal!

Your Friends and Their Phones (1)

Wait just a minute, I need to answer this

Andy and Betsy are having dinner at their favorite Italian restaurant.

Andy: Wow! The food looks extraordinary. The chefs here really know how to present their food.

Betsy: They sure do! I'm going to post a picture of it online.

Andy: Really? We can just tell our friends that the food here is great.

Betsy: Well, I suppose. But you know what they say, "A picture is worth a thousand word."

Andy: Yeah, and the time you spend taking that picture allows your food to get cold.

Betsy: It doesn't take that long.

Andy: Sure it does. Think of how much time you spend arranging the plate and getting the right angle. After that you edit the photo, connect to the Internet and finally you post it. Not to mention the extra time you need to add the location and a caption.

Betsy: That's not a big deal. My food is nice and warm, and I've just provided the restaurant with free marketing.

Andy: What are you talking about?

Betsy: By posting a picture, people can see what the food looks like and even get an idea of what to order.

[Advanced] Silence Isn’t Always Golden

How giving someone the silent treatment can damage a relationship

After more than 11 years together, Gwendolyn and Jim Mulholland found their marriage on the brink because, she admits, her use of the silent treatment had become a go-to weapon whenever problems arose.

She fully realized that it completely shut down communication — her goal — because she didn't want to deal with issues then and there and knew it was punishing Jim while giving her a sense of control.

"The silent treatment is caused by a combination of hurt feelings and an inability or unwillingness to talk about them," says Tina Gilbertson, a Portland, Ore., counselor and author of "Constructive Wallowing: How To Beat Bad Feelings by Letting Yourself Have Them" (Viva Editions). "It's easy to think of the silent person as holding the power in the situation, but in reality (she) often feels small and powerless. She really has no idea what to say or do when hurt, so she withdraws."

"Ultimately, it has nothing to do with the argument but needing to feel like you are in control of something when everything else around you is spinning out of control," echoes Mulholland, of Royal Oak, Mich.

But it's one of the worst things to do for anyone who values their relationship. New York therapist Jane Greer calls the silent treatment the "equivalent of a deadly emotional assassination. The reason it's so deadly is because it eclipses the purpose of anger, which is to use it constructively to bring about positive change going forward in a relationship," she says.

Good Decisions 3/25

  • Follow your heart.
  • Weigh out the possible outcomes.
  • Don’t rush.
What goes into making a good decision?

Decisions, decisions. Every day, you probably face endless choices from what clothes to wear to what friends to have lunch with. Some decisions are easywhile others are not. Maybe you’ve been offered a job.Should you take it? Your friend offers some advice. Should you heed it? According to a study by Sheena Iyengar of Columbia University, Americans make about 70 decisions every day. So how do you make a good one?

Follow your heart
Be self-reflective. “People who aren’t self-reflective are going to end up making bad decisions because they don’t really know what they want in the first place,” says David Welch. He’s the author of Decisions, Decisions: The Art of Effective Decision Making.

Listen to that quiet voice inside your heart. A choice based upon intuition tends to be more beneficial for your life path.

Weigh the possible outcomes
After you have all the facts, weigh the advantages and disadvantages of your options. Need a second opinion? Explain the situation to someone you trust to help gain new insight.

Don’t rush
When faced with a difficult choice, gather the information you need, and then take a break. Don’t make any decisions when under a lot of stress.

Info Cloud
Teaching Topic: Pros and Cons 利與弊 「Pros」和「Cons」不單獨用16:10
When you weigh the advantages and disadvantages of something, you’re considering or comparing the pros and cons.

Pros and cons is actually short for pro and contra, a Latin phrase that means for and against.

Now, since this is a stock expression we should use it as such, and not break it up. If we just talk about pro or con by itself, it may cause confusion.

Right! Since the two words have different meanings, outside of the phrase pros and cons without any contexts, a pro or con can be misinterpreted.

So if I want to emphasize many advantages of foot ball team has, I should just say that, instead of saying the football team has lots of pros.

Right! If I heard the football team has lots of pros, I would think the team has many professional players.

That’s right, and the same with con, which can mean fraud.

So if we don’t first mention pros and cons, we should use other words like advantages and disadvantages, upsides and downsides, drawbacks etc. For example, being a fashion model is fun and exciting but there are downsides to the job as well.

California Here I Come (3)

  • An old Mexican village
  • Union Station
  • L.A. City Hall
  • Walt Disney Concert Hall
Downtown Los Angeles
The day before going home, our alumni decided to take a city tour of Los Angeles. We weren't seeing movie scenes anymore; we were seeing real ones.

First we went to an old Mexican village in the middle of the city. We saw how the earliest people's lifestyle and architecture differed form that of the Americans.

The second stop was Union Station, which is over 75 years old but still operational.

The third place was city hall. We went to the top floor, and the scenery of LA was before us. Never will I forget the feeling when I opened the balcony door -- "A dream come true."

The last place we went was an impressive structure -- The Walt Disney Concert Hall. We didn't have time for the concert, so we just took some pictures and left.

I learned so many new things from this trip and have a reason to study hard. I hope one day to visit America -- by myself.

  • A NASA structure
  • Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL)
  • Fort Irwin
The trip was awesome! The trip not only fulfilled my dream but also broadened my horizons. We visited fantastic places like the Goldstone Deep Space Communications Complex. This NASA structure is located in a military base in the Mojave Desert. Civilians usually don't have access since it's a restricted area. But one of our graduates who works at Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) applied for us to visit.

Jet Propulsion Laboratory
Located in Los Angeles County, JPL sits on a lovely hillside where deer wander around. JPL's main tasks are to make and launch satellites. The most famous is Curiosity, which is now on Mars.

Fort Irwin
This stop wasn't in the original plan. However when I saw the weaponry, I begged our guide to drive around the fort. He told us that this camp belongs to the United States Army. There are some cool signs there like "Tank crossing." Many vehicles used in movies were there: Hummers, M1 Abrams, Cobra gunships, etc.

California Here I Come (1)

  • How did the opportunity arise?
  • A paper, an exam, and an interview
A dream come true

When I was a kid, I saw a lot of American cartoons and movies. Some friends had traveled to or studied in the U.S., and I wanted to visit America. I thought I’d have to wait many years, but miracles happen.

One day, I received a notice from my high school alumni association. It was about an all-expenses-paid study tour to California. Everyone in high school could apply, and the association would choose four winners.

First, I had to write a paper titled “What’s the influence of information digitization in modern life?” Ten students would proceed to the next level. I had never written a paper before so I was very surprised my paper was selected! Second was a written examination and interview. I just did a self-introduction for the interview. And I didn’t find the written exam hard because I’ve been reading Studio Classroom for years. I had no problem with the vocabulary or listening.

A month later, I burst into tears of joy when my dream came true!

Eating Habits (2)

Egypt
Egyptians commonly start the day with a drink, sometimes accompanied by bread. Breakfast can be eaten any time after this but before the day's main meal. In the past, this main meal was served at around 3:00 p.m. But now people work longer hours and eat when they get home at around 6:00 p.m.
Dinner parties are held later, around 9:00 p.m. Most Egyptian meals include bread or rice, cooked vegetables and beans or meat.

The United States
Americans' ancestors came from many countries, so American eating habits vary. Some take time to prepare and eat a hot breakfast. Others grab a bagel while rushing out the door - or just skip breakfast. For lunch, most Americans eat a sandwich or leftovers. Traditionally, families gathered for a large evening meal around 6:00, but now busy schedules force many families to eat in shifts.

American restaurant portions tend to be huge. But you don't have to finish them; taking leftovers home is common.

As you travel, try out some local eating habits - and savor the experience!

Eating Habits (1)

A look at how people eat around the world

Food is a major part of every culture. After all, everyone needs to eat! But each country has its own traditions regarding what people eat and when.

France
France is known for its fine cuisine, and its people take food seriously. Most eat three meals a day at fixed times and never snack between meals. Breakfast is a light meal of bread and coffee. They eat lunch at around 1 p.m. and a dinner with multiple courses after 8 p.m.

The French consider eating a social activity. Eating alone is rare, and eating while doing something else is unheard-of. The French take time to enjoy their meals - and visitors should do the same.

Brazil
Like the French, Brazilians typically eat a light breakfast. Lunch, the largest meal of the day, usually consists of some combination of meat, rice, potatoes, beans and vegetables.

Between 6 p.m. and 8 p.m., people enjoy a smaller meal with their families. Brazilians don't mind snacking and sometimes buy food from street carts. But they always finish eating before walking away.

Natural Mosquito Repellents

Keep annoying insects away - naturally

Warm weather is around the corner, so it's time to begin protecting yourself from disease-carrying mosquitoes. With so many products out there, though, how do you choose a safe and effective repellent?

Make your own
Natural repellents are easy to make; plus you can choose chemical-free ingredients and control the amount of ingredients you use.

Start with one of the following essential plant oils such as lemon eucalyptus, citronella, cinnamon, etc. In nature, these oils inherently repel mosquitoes, with lemon eucalyptus considered by many researchers the most effective.

Mix 10 to 25 drops of your essential oil with approximately two soup spoons of alcohol or a cooking oil such as sunflower or vegetable oil. Then before going outside, rub the mixture into skin.

Things to remember
Just because something is natural doesn't mean it is safe for your skin. Before rubbing large amounts of any plant oil into your skin, try a small drop to be sure you aren't allergic to it.

Also with natural repellents, you will need to reapply more frequently than those with chemicals. Don't let your fear of mosquitoes or chemicals keep you indoors this year.

The Sugar Bush Fair

  • The Sugar Bush Fair

  • Activities at the fair

A celebration of nature’s gift of maple syrup
What do a chilly March morning, an outdoor tent and pancakes have in common? The 31st annual Sugar Bush Fair. The Spring Valley Nature Center, just northwest of Chicago, organizes the event. The fair draws hundreds of adults and children alike all eager for a taste of pancakes with real maple syrup. And that's just the beginning!

Activities
When everyone is full, they can visit the Native American and pioneer sugar camps to see demonstrations of maple syrup production.

Visitors learn how to tap trees for sap and then see how it is boiled down. The end result -- syrup! In addition to the demonstrations, a children's puppet show and hayrides make for an entertaining time.

David Brooks, manager of the center, notes that the fair has become an annual tradition for many families. He finds it impressive that people attend even when the weather is cold. But, people know that the celebration means winter is ending and spring is coming.

So if you find yourself in the Chicago area this weekend, stop by for good food and good fun!

Emma Watson (3)

  • Stage three: the present
  • What roles did she take after Harry Potter?
  • U.N. Goodwill Ambassador

Stage Three: The Present
One might think that Watson would wish to run from Hermione in her post-Potter life, but that's not Watson's perspective. "That seems like a negative place to jump off from -- trying to get away from something rather than trying to get towards something," she comments. She wanted to do something unconventional, not something that would be too comfortable, such as period pieces. "The one thing I knew I didn't want to do was get myself into a corset because I was worried I'd never get out again."

So what roles did Watson step into? In films, she began to play Americans (as in Wallflower) and also starred in the decidedly different Noah with Russel Crowe.

But it's a role outside of the film industry that has gotten everyone's attention since then -- that of a U.N. Women Goodwill Ambassador.

Many people questioned the right of a young actor to fill this position. In her famous speech on feminism, she gave voice to an answer:"I've told myself firmly, 'If not me, who? If not now, when?'"

Emma Watson (2)

  • Stage two: the degree
  • Can an actor ever have a normal life?
  • What other movies is Emma Watson in?
Stage Two: The Degree
Watson enrolled at Brown University in Rhode Island before production ended on the Harry Potter films. She began work on a degree in English at Brown in the fall of 2009, and she "was insistent on being normal and doing normal things."

Sometimes it worked, and sometimes it didn't. She lived in a dorm with a roommate and a community bathroom. But this didn't keep one student from crying out in class, "Ten points for Gryffindor!" after an intelligent response from Watson. Such attention can hardly be avoided by the Guinness World Record holder for highest-grossing actress of the decade, her movies earning US$5.4 billion.

In early 2011, Watson took a break from Brown when she returned to England. While there, she continued her studies at Oxford with intentions to return to Brown. The plan worked out well with several other films being released prior to her graduation from Brown in May 2014.

These included Marilyn Monroe biopic My Week With Marilyn (2011) and coming-of-age drama The Perks of Being a Wallflower (2012).

The Computer Gets Personal (2) 3/6

Meetings weren't formal but were held in a spirit of fun and discovery. The meetings were loosely divided into a few sections. One part was for sharing and discussing while another part was for giving computer demonstrations. The people in the group didn't care about making money. Their goal was to share their ideas -- and computer parts -- freely. The hoped that their efforts would make low-cost home computers a reality for average people.

Computers -- built by hand!
When the group first started, only six had built computer systems that could run. But several had placed orders for a new computer called the Altair 8800. The computer usually came as a kit that had to be built by hand. Once finished, it looked like a box with several lights and switches. There wasn't any keyboard, let alone a monitor. But the computer worked, allowing club members to develop their computer-building and programming skills.

Emma Watson (1)

A girl on the world stage

"I just felt like that part belonged to me. I know that sounds crazy, but from that first audition, I always knew." Filled with this confidence, Emma Waston stepped into one of movies' biggest franchises of all time, Harry Potter.

Stage One: The Blockbusters
Nine-year-old Watson actually fought through eight auditions, during which she became author J. K. Rowling's favorite for the part. She indeed became Hermione Granger, a transformation that spanned a decade and a lifetime. The time devoted to the eight-film series had its challenges as well.

Watson asserts that she will forever be proud of the Harry Potter films, but she also sees that they curbed her young life in some ways. She was often frustrated by her child star status in the press. She felt that she lived in a bubble, having little interaction with the larger film world. Yet, it was a broad bubble that also took her around the world. "It was really only once Harry Potter ended and I went to university that it hit me how unusual a position I was in."

The Sound of Music (2)

Happy 50th anniversary to one of the world's most beloved musicals!

The plot
The Sound of Music tells the story of Maria, a young Austrian woman who is preparing to become a nun. For a temporary assignment, she becomes governess to seven children whose widowed father is often away from home. Maria introduces the unhappy children to the joy of music, and they form a choir. The children and their father grow to love Maria, and the couple gets married.

The story takes place as events leading up to World War II are escalating, and Germany has seized control of Austria.

In a dramatic ending, after the children compete and win the Salzburg Music Festival, the family begins their escape. They sneak away from the theater and walk across the snow-covered mountains into Switzerland to freedom!

A cultural phenomenon
Over the past 50 years, The Sound of Music has been staged in numerous places around the world. There have been performances in London, Japan, Sweden, Brazil, China and more. Audiences still flock to performances, thanks to a rich legacy of beautiful music and a classic story, left behind by the ever-popular 1965 film.
