A Failure to Communicate (1)

What's the best way to express your feelings?

Coach Martin is alone in a locker room when Tyler, one of his basketball players, comes in. Earlier Tyler's teammate Caleb yelled at him for playing badly.

Tyler: Coach! You're still here?

Coach: I thought you might need someone to talk to. Are you OK?

Tyler: Not really. What gives Caleb the right to yell at me like that?

Coach: I've talked to Caleb. It's never appropriate to shame another person like that, especially a teammate. An outburst is not a good way to deal with any conflict.

Tyler: Conflict? There was no conflict until he blamed me for losing the game! I admit that I probably didn't pass the ball enough. But he didn't have to act like that!

Coach: You didn't pass the ball enough. But I agree that yelling at you was wrong. And I think you should have told him, that, but you didn't say anything.

Tyler: Coach, I never thought you'd tell me to do something like that. Wouldn't yelling at Caleb just make him more defensive?

Coach: I didn't tell you to yell at him, but I think you could have stood up for yourself. I'd rather have you talk about the problem than just sit there feeling resentful.

Teaching Topic: You Shouldn’t Have Written “Of” 為何老外會把should have寫成should of?
should 應該
should have 原本應該做什麼事, 但沒有做, 這是一種假設語氣用法, 表示某種情況與現在事實相反
- You should have told him. 你當初應該告訴他, 但沒有
口語 You should've told him. 聽起來像是 should of, 所以會拼錯成 should of
同樣的 could have, would have, might have, must have 也有同樣的情況
