Final Update - 2013-08-02
Chipotle has released the final answers here:

or just scroll down my post to see final updates.

Thank you everyone for participating in discussions or providing corrections.

It was a lot of fun! : )

Last but not least, "HAPPY 20th CHIPOTLE!"

Chipotle Adventurrito 2013

Adventurrito Answer 20
The order of everyone's questions and/or answers may be different!
Think carefully, because you only have one chance to submit your answers.

1. E-potle
Giuseppe Arcimboldo, who just made the varsity squad, was riding to the farmers market on his skateboard when he realized that he forgot to put his water bottle in his pepper print tote bag. What would this scenario cost at the Chipotle gear store? (no tax, no shipping, and currently on sale)?

$133.16

My best guess!
Updated, thanks to anonymous and Keith J, though I'm still debating whether Giuseppe would wear a t-shirt promoting himself. In that case, the original answer of $115.56 would be correct. : )

Final Update:
$133.16 was the correct answer, which means the Giuseppe Arcimboldo shirt was included in the calculations.

( 17.60 + 52 + 36 + 14.36 + 13.2 = 133.16 )

http://store.chipotle.com/products/tshirts-chipotle-veg-head-mens-tee $17.60

http://store.chipotle.com/products/hoodies-chipotle-varsity-hoodie $52.00

http://store.chipotle.com/products/element-for-chipotle-skateboard-deck $36.00

http://store.chipotle.com/products/kleen-kanteen-for-chipotle-water-bottle $14.36

http://store.chipotle.com/products/totes-Chipotle-Pepper-Print-Tote-Bag $13.20

2. The Shady Internet Café
You’ve already met Joe, the head of Chipotle Social Media. Well, there’s a whole team of people working with him, responding directly to posts and tweets, blogging, posting, tweeting and so on. Who isn’t on that team?

Bruce

https://twitter.com/ChipotleTweets

Myra, Rusty, Joe, Nicole and Wayne all appear on the Chipotle tweets.

3. Free Range Press
In 2011, Steve Ells, was invited to testify before Congress about what topic?

Chipotle’s rejection of the sub-therapeutic use of antibiotics in animals

http://www.treehugger.com/health/chipotle-testifies-before-congress-to-curb-antibiotic-use-in-livestock.html

4. The Rumor Mill
When Steve Ells founded Chipotle, he was on his own. As the company grew, he was determined not to franchise—which could have raised quick cash. Instead, he opted to seek out private investment. One very large company invested in Chipotle in 1998, allowing the company to grow rapidly without franchising, and then COMPLETELY sold their interest in 2006. What was that company (this should be really easy if you've been paying attention)?

McDonald’s

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chipotle_Mexican_Grill

"In 1998, McDonald's made an initial minority investment in the company. By 2001, the company had grown to be Chipotle's largest investor. The investment from McDonald's allowed the firm to quickly expand, from 16 restaurants in 1998 to over 500 by 2005. In October 2006, McDonald's fully divested from Chipotle."

5. Pig-spiration Point
Jeremiah Tower gave Steve his start at Stars. Before he left to create Stars, at what legendary Northern California establishment was Tower the chef de cuisine?

Chez Panisse

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chipotle_Mexican_Grill

Final Update:
There are 2 answers that are accepted.
This is the real order:
Kansas, Missouri, Minnesota, Ohio, Arizona

However, the Chipotle Story ( http://www.chipotle.com/en-us/chipotle_story/chipotle_story.aspx ) only mentions Ohio and Minnesota, hence my earlier answer was also accepted as well.

9. CHIP Radio Tower
What was the #1 Billboard song the day the first Chipotle opened?

SWV (Sisters With Voices) – “Weak”

https://www.facebook.com/chipotle/info

Chipotle opened first restaurant on July 13, 1993

http://www.billboard.com/charts/1993-07-10/hot-100

"Weak" by SWV, was the number one single the same week Chipotle opened.

10. A Quiet Mountain Town
South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone are two of many pop culture icons that are connected to Chipotle in one way or another. Who on this list isn’t?

Simon Cowell

http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/mlb-big-league-stew/bryce-harper-joins-chipotle-prestigious-secretive-free-burrito-231034104--mlb.html

Bryce Harper is a memer of the secret free-burrito society.

http://calendar.orlandoweekly.com/Venues/v581/Chipotle

"Chipotle is Ozzy Osbourne's favorite burrito haunt. And now the Denver-based chain (there are more than 300 across the country) of sorta Tex-Mex food has moved into the area, one that already has quite a few competitors. So the Ozzy endorsement sure doesn't hurt."

http://www.oprah.com/oprahshow/The-Truth-About-Food-with-Michael-Pollan/8

Steve Ells goes on Oprah.

11. Cow Country
For “Back to the Start,” we got Willie Nelson to cover the Coldplay song “The Scientist,” which turned into a bit of a country hit on iTunes. What artist have both Willie and Coldplay covered?

http://www.coversproject.com/artist/willie%20nelson/

Willie Nelson covered the Beatles' "One After 909", "Something", and "Yesterday".

http://www.coversproject.com/artist/coldplay/

Cold Play covered the Beatles' "Here Comes the Sun".

12. The Live-stock Exchange
What was the closing market price on the day of Chipotle’s initial public offering?

$22.00
My best guess!

http://online.wsj.com/article/SB113829672351557263.html

http://usatoday30.usatoday.com/money/industries/food/2006-01-26-chipotle-ipo_x.htm

Most sites point to an initial offering of $22 and closing at $44 the first day.
I'm not sure why $44 isn't among the choices...

Final Update:
Since this was a trick question, there are no correct answers.  Fortunately, this question doesn't count against your score.  The closing stock price on the day of Chipotle's IPO was $44.

13. Farm and Charm School
So now you know the 13 characteristics of every Chipotle employee. But to prove you are truly fluent in Burrito-ese, can you tell us which of the abbreviations below does not correspond to a job title at Chipotle?

GM2
My best guess!

http://careers.chipotle.com/en-us/careers/path_and_compensation/path_and_compensation.aspx

In the picture, clicking on "RESTAURATEUR (2-4)" will reveal R2, R3, and R4 abbreviations.
R+ is possibly a valid job title.

In the picture, clicking on "HOURLY MANAGER" will reveal Kitchen Manger (KM) and Service Manager (SM).

http://www.stockmarketstudy.org/wordpress/chipotle-mexican-grills-ceo-discusses-q1-2012-results-earnings-call-transcript/

"Currently, we have 30 apprentice team leaders, all of whom worked their way up from hourly positions in our restaurants." So ATL is a valid title.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j28bdq-q9l0

This video gives an overview of Chipotle's management team.

Updated, thanks to Anonymous for the confirmation.

Final Update:
GM2 was the correct answer; however, Chipotle did not provide any explanations or references.

https://twitter.com/ChipotleTweets/status/315664416328794112

Here is a tweet by Joe confirming R+ and ATL.

14. The Dine-in Hall
Putting clues for Adventurrito in the hand-drawn art of our basket liners was pretty tough to pull off. Which of the following pieces of Chipotle packaging did everyone but professional designers think was misprinted because of the lorem ipsum placeholder text?

Large rope handle bag

http://designenvy.aiga.org/the-chipotle-lorem-ipsum-bag/

One side of the bag is designed with stream-of-consciousness writing on it: “It’s probably too small for your dreams & aspirations…” But wait… The other side is even more inspiring. They actually had the guts to print lorem ipsum on it!

15. Carnitas Call Center
Nowadays you can connect with Chipotle Catering by calling 1-800-CHIPOTLE (yes, the “E” isn’t necessary, but 1-800-CHIPOTL looks silly). Before we set up that number, you had to call the restaurants directly. Imagine it is 20 years ago and you want to call Steve Ells, Chipotle’s founder. What is the sum of the digits of our first restaurant’s phone number?

25

http://www.yelp.com/biz/chipotle-mexican-grill-denver-5

First Chipotle restuarant:
1644 E Evans Ave
Denver, CO 80210
(303) 722-4121

( 3 + 0 + 3 + 7 + 2 + 2 + 4 + 1 + 2 + 1 = 25 )

16. The FWI Freeway
Which one of these classic Chipotle headlines debuted first?

The gourmet restaurant where you eat with your hands
My best guess!

http://www.trademarkia.com/the-gourmet-restaurant-where-you-eat-with-your-hands-78141052.html

First used in 1997, Chipotle filed for trademark in 2002 and was granted in 2003.

Final Update:
"The gourmet restaurant..." was the correct answer; however, Chipotle did not provide any explanations or references.

17. Secret Culinary HQ
Chipotle Chef Nate Appleman is frequently on television, and recently won a big fancy culinary competition. Name the show on which he was the winner:

Chopped All-Stars

http://eater.com/archives/2011/04/04/nate-appleman-wins-chopped-allstars.php

18. Museum of Naturally‑Raised HistorySpeaking of Naturally-Raised History, and dinosaurs for that matter, we're pretty concerned with the colossal amount of fossil fuel energy required to produce meat. So much so, that we're currently working on a four-part miniseries that takes a humorous and outrageously twisted look at that issue, as part of a larger spoof of the unsustainable world of industrial agriculture. (stay tuned). According to Professor David Pimental, what is the ratio of fossil fuel calories needed to produce one calorie of meat?

28 to 1

http://www.worldwatch.org/node/549

It takes, on average, 28 calories of fossil fuel energy to produce 1 calorie of meat protein for human consumption, [whereas] it takes only 3.3 calories of fossil- fuel energy to produce 1 calorie of protein from grain for human consumption. —David Pimentel, Cornell University

19. Adobo Amphitheater
At the Chipotle Cultivate Festivals you can’t buy a burrito, no matter how much you want one. However, you can enjoy some very special menu items developed by our culinary team. Besides burritos, which of the following will you NOT find at this year’s Cultivate?

Fajita Vegetables

http://chipotle.com/cultivate/SanFrancisco.aspx#chipotle-eats

Fajita vegetables does not appear any of the 4 menu item descriptions.

TACOS
Soft corn tortillas with grilled chicken or Sofritas™, fresh tomato salsa, and shredded cheese.

GORDITAS
Grilled flat bread with steak or braised pork, escabeche, sour cream, and queso fresco.

ESQUITES
A salad of charred corn, shredded cabbage, and crispy tortillas, tossed with roasted tomatillos, sour cream, pickled onions, and cotija cheese.

SHOPHOUSE RICE BOWL
Jasmine rice with pork & chicken meatballs or organic tofu, charred green beans, green curry and green papaya slaw.

20. The Final-Final Challenge
So here it is, the deliciously devious dessert to your multiple choice meal. Get pumped. Throughout Adventurrito, you’ve had the chance to get hints each day by texting daily receipt codes to our Adventurrito phone hub. Every letter and number of those 6-digit receipt codes is pictured below. Use each letter or number ONCE to fill in the blanks that make up three complete sentences — we’ve filled in the letters from the first three codes for you to get you started. Good luck, and may the burrito gods be with you.

STEVE ELLS FOUNDED CHIPOTLE IN CO IN 1993. THE FIRST MENU DID NOT HAVE BARBACOA. IN FACT, THERE WERE NO MENU BOARDS AT ALL. HAPPY 20TH, CHIPOTLE.

Adventurrito Answer 19
No

This one is very easy. McDonald's used to be Chipotle's largest investor, but has fully divested since 2006.

Question: Like the most gossiped about couples in Hollywood, McDonald's and Chipotle have often been mentioned in the same sentence with whispers of "are they or aren't they?" Help us settle this once and for all. Does McDonald's own Chipotle?

    2. Both GM2 and R are job titles. GM2 = General Manager Level 2 which is just below a Regional Manager. The "R" titles refer to Restaurateur which is an OWNER, not an EMPLOYEE.

    1. Yes, I believe this to be correct: bold face on fresh food. Inspired by the artist Giuseppe Archemboldo and featured on ecru T-shirt . Our Signature tees are made with 100% organic cotton, featuring whip-stitched details at the arms and bottom hem, with a comfortable “lived-in” feel. The organic cotton is grown without harmful pesticides, fertilizers, and chemicals and we use water based dyes and low-impact printing methods that not only look and feel good, but that are good for people and planet. Designed by Loomstate for Chipotle, made in the USA.

    2. They should accept either $133.16 or $115.56, since Giuseppe's last name is spelled differently on the contest than it is on the store's website. (Archemboldo vs. Arcimboldo)

    3. Thanks all for the debate. I hope they accept both too, since my original answer was $115.56.

  24. I'm not sure I agree with the store location answer. I know Chipotle's website says the first stores they opened outside of Colorado were in Ohio and Minnesota in 1999. However, there are numerous sources online that say their first store outside of Colorado was slated to open in Kansas City, Missouri in 1998. That one got pushed back, and the first store to open outside of Colorado was in Overland Park, Kansas in 1998. If you look at store numbers (you can find store numbers by looking at Chipotle jobs), you will see the first one outside of Colorado was store number 15 in Kansas. I think the correct answer is that the first store outside of Colorado opened in Kansas in 1998.

    1. As you appear serious in your retort, I've seriously considered it, but so far am really not buying it, and below is why; but, in considering it and writing you this, ironically I did find TOP PROOF (EVEN BETTER THAN THIS BLOGGER's POST CURRENTLY HAS) that that the answer given by the blogger is indeed correct.
*As I couldn't say enough, could you (now & especially in the future) kindly include URLs telling where you're getting your info. Yes it's possible one could guess, but why force them? And then mistakes could easily be made. Specifically:
**You say "I know Chipotle's website says the first stores they opened outside of Colorado were in Ohio and Minnesota in 1999." but I don't know that (yet) - What URL are you looking at?
**Ok, now that you referred me there (though of course that would be the place to look 1st), INDEED I FIND WHAT YOU _FIRST_ SAY (which IS SIGNIFICANT) but which you then oddly dismiss: I find _the contest host's_ official site (and seems nothing can be more official than that!) telling the answer, specifically http://www.chipotle.com/en-us/chipotle_story/where_did_we_come_from/where_did_we_come_from.aspx (then click on city-scapes picture –I hate Flash as one can't anchor-to & quote text on page!) saying “1999
First Chipotles opened outside of Colorado: Minneapolis, MN and Columbus, OH”, and there is only 1 answer option listed giving these 2 first (though in reverse order, “Ohio, Minnesota, ”, though that would seem not to matter), so that would seem the only possible correct answer, and indeed is the one given by the blogger.
***So why don't you buy this?? -as the explanation you give for not buying doesn't seem to hold water:
**Do note that the blogger (very respectfully) DOES include the URLs of what s/he's referring to & his/her sources. Indeed he cites the Wikipedia page (which then cites an independent article) which more specifically is currently http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chipotle_Mexican_Grill#cite_ref-15 saying "In 1999, the first restaurants outside of Colorado opened in Columbus, Ohio, and Minneapolis, Minnesota.[15]"
**but you say here "there are numerous sources online that say their first store outside of Colorado was slated to open in Kansas .. and the first store to open outside of Colorado was in Overland Park, Kansas in 1998." -what URLs? (And including I really don't want to go guessing & searching since what you claim already doesn't seem to be making good sense)
**You say "If you look at store numbers (you can find store numbers by looking at Chipotle jobs), you will see the first one outside of Colorado was store number 15 in Kansas.",
***Yes, to be specific (as I would like to to be, as most probably would) http://jobs.chipotle.com/ , when one runs a query there, does seem to include store location #s
***But there seem to be hundreds if not thousands of job openings and I see no way to sort by location so you can say what you're claiming.
***And even if possible, the store # doesn't tell the order in which the stores were actually opened, especially if, as you say there are delays ("That one got pushed back")
*Finally what replacement multiple choice answer are you suggesting instead of "Ohio, Minnesota, "? As the only 2 that put "Kansas" first as you say then are then followed by "Missouri", so would then Ohio & Minnesota at best 3rd, even more conflicting Wikipedia saying they were 1st.
*So without further info plus these unanswered points in your alternative, I'm still thinking the blogger's answer is correct, and wondering why you really come up with this argument. You aren't attempting to write something to sound (on first pass) researched but to actually mislead mislead people, are you? (I hope not.)

  25. For the E-potle question, the only thing that comes to my mind repeatedly is the fact that it is a full-zip hoodie, so therefore a person would wear a shirt underneath it to ensure that if it comes unzipped then there is something under it. This means that Giuseppe would want to have the t-shirt that he designed under the Varsity Hoodie, making the price $133.16 instead of the $115.56 price without the shirt. Just a thought from a logical point of view. Do not know if it is right or not, but when looking at the picture for the hoodie it makes sense to have something under the jacket.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I completely agree. If I were wearing a hoodie, I'd have a t-shirt on underneath in case it gets too hot and I need to unzip.

PS, Giuseppe agrees with you too since $133.16 is the official answer from Chipotle! :)
