The Computer Gets Personal (2) 3/6

Meetings weren't formal but were held in a spirit of fun and discovery. The meetings were loosely divided into a few sections. One part was for sharing and discussing while another part was for giving computer demonstrations. The people in the group didn't care about making money. Their goal was to share their ideas -- and computer parts -- freely. The hoped that their efforts would make low-cost home computers a reality for average people.

Computers -- built by hand!
When the group first started, only six had built computer systems that could run. But several had placed orders for a new computer called the Altair 8800. The computer usually came as a kit that had to be built by hand. Once finished, it looked like a box with several lights and switches. There wasn't any keyboard, let alone a monitor. But the computer worked, allowing club members to develop their computer-building and programming skills.
