Every Child Needs a Teacher Campaign
GCE is working with national governments to provide more quality teachers. Globally, 1.7 million primary school teachers are needed to reach the 2015 educational goal.
Literacy For All Campaign
Today, nearly one in six people around the world cannot read or write. Not being able to read impacts a person's job opportunities and increases poverty. GCE seeks to provide teaching materials in primary students' mother tongues.
Make it Right For Girls Campaign
Around the world, many girls face neglect and are often denied an education. GCE aims to give women the same opportunities as men.
Every spring, GCE leads the Global Action Week. During this week, GCE highlights people who have been denied educational opportunities. This year the Global Action Week focuses on providing an education to disabled people.
GCE believes that quality education can change lives.

Global Campaign for Education (1)
Everyone has the right to an education
Tasui is a teenager who lives in Africa. When he was young, he had polio, and now he crawls on his hands and knees. Although he wants to go to school, he must work. Tasui is only one of millions of children who can't go to school. Many must work to support their families. Others are sick, disabled or can't travel long distances. Still others don't have the finances to pay school fees.
Therefore, more than 100 million children will never receive an education. Can anything be done? Global Campaign for Education (GCE) think so. It was formed to solve this problem. The movement aims to give every person, especially those in poverty, an opportunity to get an education.
Where it all started
Established in 1999, GCE is made up of 120 organizations with members in almost 100 countries. Education is a basic human right, and GCE campaigns to realize this right. It works with governments to improve education in each country.

The Big Issue
Changing lives forever
How can you help a homeless person? Just giving him money won't solve his problem. It's critical that he learns how to make his own money. The magazine The Big Issue gives him that chance. Any homeless person who wants to make money can apply for a job selling the magazine. First, he must prove he's homeless or soon will be. After training, he receives 10 free copies of the magazine which sell for NT$100 each. With that money, he buys more magazines for NT$50 each. The more magazines sold, the more money earned.
Where it all began
In 1991, John Bird and Gordon Roddick, of the United Kingdom, wanted to help homeless people. They founded a monthly magazine that homeless people could see. Its appealing content made people want to buy and read it. The idea spread. In April 2010, magazine editor Fines Lee published Taiwan's first copy of The Big Issue. "Instead of giving the homeless money," Lee says, "we provide them with a way to help themselves, and we encourage the public to do the same."

Love Is Blind (2)
As the Gauvains took in more children, dormitories and a school were built. In 2008, Bethel moved to a site on a farm. They later added special gardens that allowed the kids to help out.
A family feel
Since its founding, Bethel has opened a total of four foster care projects in China. Together, they make up the Love is Blind part of Bethel's efforts. They are run like family homes, full of hope and laughter. That's why the children refer to Delphine and Guillaume as Faguo Mama (法國媽媽) and Faguo Baba (法國爸爸).
Don't assume the staff is soft on the kids, though. They teach the kids how to perform daily routines independently. In addition, the kids have classes. Delphine boasts that all of Bethel's kids are fluent in English before turning 18.
The Gauvains and their three kids moved to the Philippines in 2012 after devoting 10 years to Bethel China. They still remain involved with Bethel's leadership. And in their new location, they have opened a community center to help train people with work skills.

Love Is Blind (1)
A French couple helps blind orphans live life to the fullest
When it comes to blessing others, some people make lofty plans that end up going nowhere. But that's not the case with Delphine and Guillaume Gauvain. When they opened an orphanage for blind children in China, they planned to bless the kids. But they were willing to learn along the way.
Path to China
The French couple's first step was moving from Canada to Hong Kong. Their first step toward serving orphans was adopting David, a Chinese boy with a birth defect. Guillaume, a jazz pianist, first met David while playing at the boy's foster home. As soon as David ran up to him, Guillaume was immediately hooked!
In search of people they could help, the couple moved to Beijing in 2002. After some research, they discovered that blind children needed a staggering amount of special care.
That's why they started Bethel - a foster care program focusing on blind children. In December 2003 they rented a house and received their first three children. Because two of the children were autistic as well as blind, Delphine was overwhelmed at first. But she soon found ways to help the kids.

Their motto – To save, to save
"Instead of just giving money, you can see how it's used and meet the people it helps. It doesn't take that much to be a blessing to others," says Steven Pan. Steven is one of the bicyclists in the "1919 Ride for Love" campaign. Started in 2002 as a project of the Chinese Christian Relief Association, the "1919 Ride for Love" serves the poorest of the poor. Three yearly biking events enable 1919 to raise awareness and funds.
Accompany Riding
On eight Saturdays from October through December, "Accompany Riding" events take place. Each events is around 25 kilometers. A total of 10,000 people participate. The entire family can join and fun.
The Challenge
The first Saturday in October around 1,000 riders bike 30 kilometers and engage in activities from rope climbing to scavenger hunts.
The Ride for Love
From December 22 to January 4, 38 people will ride around the island. These biking enthusiasts raise at least NT$75,000 each to participate. Plus, they pay NT$30,000 for food and hotels. They stop twice a day at supported villages and are always met with a hearty welcome. "Meeting kids in countryside villages with basically nothing is a very moving experience," states Steven.

"Instead of just giving money, you can see how it's used and meet the people it helps. It doesn't take that much to be a blessing to others," says Steven Pan. Steven is one of the bicyclists in the "1919 Ride for Love" campaign. Started in 2002 as a project of the Chinese Christian Relief Association, the "1919 Ride for Love" serves the poorest of the poor. Three yearly biking events enable 1919 to raise awareness and funds.
Accompany Riding
On eight Saturdays from October through December, "Accompany Riding" events take place. Each events is around 25 kilometers. A total of 10,000 people participate. The entire family can join and fun.
The Challenge
The first Saturday in October around 1,000 riders bike 30 kilometers and engage in activities from rope climbing to scavenger hunts.
The Ride for Love
From December 22 to January 4, 38 people will ride around the island. These biking enthusiasts raise at least NT$75,000 each to participate. Plus, they pay NT$30,000 for food and hotels. They stop twice a day at supported villages and are always met with a hearty welcome. "Meeting kids in countryside villages with basically nothing is a very moving experience," states Steven.

Millions of personal computers across the world are running at this moment, but most are using just a fraction of their full capacity to process information. Imagine what could happen. If the spare power of these millions of machines were harnessed to solve global problems. The organization Charity Engine attempts to do just that. It enables researchers and companies to use the extra computing power of thousands of personal computers. These companies pay a usage fee that goes to carefully selected charities.
The computers
Charity Engine offers a free app that has the user's computer do research as a background task. The program runs automatically, without direction from the user. Each computer works on a small chunk of a larger project and sends back its results. The results are combined to answer the researchers' questions.

For example, Rosetta@home attempts to help find cures for serious diseases by discovering the shapes of proteins. Another project, Einstein@home, tests scientific theories. How to Raise an Elephant (3)
When Jenny took in Moses in February of 2012, she believed he had only a 20 percent chance of survival. Without the immunities he'd get in his mother's milk, Moses frequently got sick. Thankfully, veterinarians and people from the Elephant Orphanage Project in nearby Zambia helped out a lot. But sadly in November 2012, he got severe diarrhea and could not get over it, and Moses died. Jenny and her many friends continue to mourn the little elephant who touched their lives in such a special way.
"Elephants are very sensitive and pick up on your emotions, if you are sad they comfort you, if you are stressed they are tense, if you are ill they are loving." Jenny said. At the moment, the Jumbo Foundation has no elephants to care for. But as elephant poaching remains a serious problem, Jenny will no doubt take in more orphans in the future. What Jenny learned from caring for Moses will help her when the next orphan comes along.

Right! To help explain things, let's pretend your best friend loses her job. A sympathetic response would be acknowledging your friend's emotional suffering by comforting her with kind words and deeds.
The empathetic response, however, would be stepping in to your frined's shoes, so to speak, and imagining what it would be like to lose your job, even for just a brief moment.
Sympathy says, "I'm sorry for you. What can I do to help you through this difficult time?"
Empathy says, "I'm sorry with you. I totally understand what you're going through."

To help with the costs of caring for Moses, Jenny started the Jumbo Foundation Elephant Orphanage. It's the first organization of its kind in Malawi. The foundation will take in other orphaned large animals. "Our orphanage is not only for elephants but all large animals like hippos, buffalos, rhinos, as no one will take them in, "said Jenny. The foundation's goal is to care for the orphaned animals and prepare them to be released into the wild.
Jenny quickly learned that an elephant baby needs more than just a special formula every two hours. Elephant mothers provide not only food but also shelter under their big bellies. Elephants can get sunburned, and Moses didn't have his mother's large size to protect him. He needed sunscreen and creams applied to his skin every day. A blanket was tied over his back during the day to protect him from the harsh African sun.
Moses needed company, especially at night, so Jenny would sleep next to him on a mattress on the floor.

The Jumbo Foundation aims to help large orphaned animals
Think about caring for a baby. Mothers can tell you all about the considerable amount of time it takes to feed, change, comfort and care for a helpless infant. Now what if that infant is an elephant calf? Instead of weighing 3 to 4 kilograms at birth, he weighs 100! And he needs to be fed every two hours, 24 hours a day for four years! Would you want to take on that kind of responsibility? Jenny Webb did. She lives in the African country of Malawi.
She took in Moses when he was a week old after his mother was killed, probably by poachers. No one else would take him in as elephants are very expensive and time-consuming to care for. But Jenny was willing and said, "Humans caused this problem, so humans must fix the problem." She spent as much time as she could caring for Moses. She also hired two employees to be with him during the day so he wouldn't be lonesome. She works as the Director of the Malawi Division of Food Products.

Christian Salvation Service Celebrates Life (1)(2)(3)
Remembering 30 years of service while looking to the future
What do Sweden, the United States, Australia and the Netherlands have in common? Nearly 1,700 kids from the island of Taiwan - all adopted with the assistance of Christian Salvation Service (CSS). Many others have stayed with their birth families with the help of CSS. Started in 1983, the organization was established to help women and children in crisis. Working together since the beginning, Paula Voigtmann and Hsieh Hui-Chen have seen the organization grow. It now includes 56 full-time staff, including 16 social workers and 24 child-care workers.
Baby Rescue
In the1980, along with assisting women and teens with unwanted pregnancies, CSS led the way in premature baby rescue. Neonatal Intensive Care Units (ICU) were new and too costly for many, CSS assisted by taking financial responsibility for the babies' care, enabling many to live full lives.
Changed lives
David - born in 1983, lives in the USA. Sports, band and singing in high school productions makes David's youth. His acting and singing were amazing. At 17 he visited his birth family with his adoptive parents, and they all found out why. His birth mother, a professional performer, was a member of a tribe noted for its performance abilities.
Alison - born in 1984, lives in the USA. With a junior high school education, Alison's teenage mother left home to work and live in a factory. It was fun and exciting at first to be away from her parent's supervision. However, she soon found herself pregnant. With the help of a CSS counselor, the young mother and her parents placed her baby in a loving and prepared home. A common story in the 80s for many, including Alison's mom.
Alison does social networking and design for a network of children's clinics and hospitals. Her passion for dancing had led to her involvement in many productions. One production in particular, coordinated by multiple dance studios, uses its proceeds to make the wishes of seriously ill children come true.
Susanna - born in 1987, lives in Sweden. One of five children in a single-parent family, the teenage girl was taken to the hospital by her mother. Only when premature labor began did the family realize the girl was pregnant. At birth, the hospital referred the 1600 gram baby, Susanna, to CSS for care.
Adopted by a family from Sweden. Susanna grew up in a loving household with her brother, adopted from Vietnam. Now she seeks to tell her birth family how grateful she is. She feels they were brave, or desperate, to give her a chance.
Steve - born in 1986, lives in the USA. Steve and his twin sister, Emily, were adopted together by a family through CSS. As a result of birth trauma, Steve has cerebral palsy(CP). Sometimes at school kids bullied him, but he didn't give up. He trained for sports and has won medals in the International Wheelchair and Amputee Sports Feberation World Games(IWAS), Steve's goal is to be a motivational speaker!
Roel - born in 1991, lives in the Netherlands. Roel was born with no left arm and only three fingers and no elbow on his fight ar. He birth parents did not feel capable of meeting his educational and medical reeds so at 1 1/2, Roel was adopted.
He went to many doctors and received lots of treatment, and despite his handicap, he tried everything. Roel has a prosthesis for his left arm. He swims, plays table tennis and collects coins.
Tiana - born in 1994, lives in Australia. In 1994 a young unwed mother gave up her premature daughter. Nineteen years later, Tiana's parents describe her as outgoing and self-confident. Upon finishing her chef apprenticeship, Tiana plans to open a Chinese tea house and restaurant.
