Did you put on perfume or cologne today? If so, you are carrying on a long tradition that began in early Egypt.
Ancient drawings dating back to around 3500 B.C. show Egyptians using fragrances. They used them in their religious services. They also used scented oils to clean their skin. From Egypt, the use of perfume spread to Greece, Rome and beyond.
The Greeks are thought to have been the first to make liquid perfumes. Their method was to mix heavy oils and fragrant powders. In early Rome men often shaved their faces. They would rub fragrance into their skin as part of the process.
Perfume goes to Europe
Perfume were brought to Europe around the 11th century by Arab and Persian traders. In 1370 in Hungary, the first modern cologne was made for the queen. It was made by mixing scented oils with alcohol and other liquids.
But France would take the art of perfume-making to a whole new level.
